Use Solar Energy to Save in Sunny Florida

You can use solar energy to heat, cool, and light your Port St. Lucie, Florida, home. With the right equipment, you can power your HVAC system and many other devices without paying for natural gas or electricity. This lowers your utility bills and helps the environment as well. The following is a brief overview of solar energy, how it works, and how it can be of benefit in your home.

How Solar Energy Works

Solar panels or tiles are the most common ways to tap into solar energy. They capture the sun’s energy with photovoltaic cells that contain layers of a semi-conductive material — usually silicon. These cells produce some power even on cloudy days. Panels can be mounted on your roof or on the ground, and the more expensive solar tiles are designed to look like roof tiles or shingles.

The Benefits of Solar Energy

Solar systems are more expensive, but you’ll get your investment back through lower utility bills in just a few years. You’ll also have electricity even during power outages. Maintenance is easy, and rain will help to clean panels and tiles for you as long as they’re tilted. You should keep trees from blocking the sun and have your system inspected by a professional at least once per year.

Types of Solar Systems

Solar air heating is used mostly in commercial buildings for heating and agricultural drying. Solar panels are installed several inches from a wall that faces south to create an air cavity. For solar HVAC systems, after the solar panels heat the air, a fan moves it to the HVAC system. A solar absorption system uses the sun’s energy to cool the air by evaporating a refrigerant fluid, and a solar desiccant system uses solar energy to dry the air, making it feel cooler. These solar air conditioning systems are also effective in regions like Florida that have humid climates.
