Should You Invest in a Geothermal Heat Pump?
The weather in Palm Beach, FL, stays moderate throughout much of the year. As a result, you may not need a traditional heating system in your home. While a furnace produces a lot of heat when needed, it uses more energy than other heating systems. Instead of using a heavy-duty heating system, manage the indoor temperature with a geothermal heat pump.
Benefits of Geothermal Heating
Geothermal heating uses heat from the Earth to raise the temperature within your home. In areas that have more extreme temperatures, a heat pump can’t always keep up. However, in Palm Beach, our temperature remains fairly comfortable throughout the changing seasons.
A geothermal heat pump uses a heat exchanger under the ground to warm your home. By using this type of heating system, you can reduce energy waste without sacrificing comfort.
Main Types of Ground Loop Systems
The four main ground loop systems are horizontal, vertical, pond/lake and open-loop. Choosing the right system depends on your property, soil quality, available land and climate.
Closed-loop systems pump antifreeze through plastic tubing submerged in water or buried beneath the ground. This loop allows for exchange between the heat pump and antifreeze solution, moving heat into your home.
If your property doesn’t have a lot of space, a vertical ground loop works well. A horizontal ground loop requires at least 100 to 300 feet of trench space.
Hybrid Options
Another option that may work well on your property is a hybrid system, which combines different geothermal resources to create a functional and efficient heating system. Since the weather in our area stays warm throughout much of the year, a hybrid system works well to produce heated and cooled air.
