History

Prior to 1959. the area that is now Palm Beach Gardens, FL was forests, cattle ranches and swamp land. John. D. MacArthur acquired the land and planned a development that would become the town of Palm Beach Gardens. In 1959, MacArthur incorporated the area, though no one yet lived on the land. The U.S. Census in 1960 recorded the city’s population as one due to a squatter that Mr. MacArthur had allowed to stay. Until the mid-1960s, when development began to grow, the city existed on paper only.

During the 1960s, as homes were completed and sold, the town rapidly grew. The 1970 Census reported the population of Palm Beach Gardens as nearly 7,000 residents. As development continued, more people were staking their claim in Palm Beach Gardens properties. Though MacArthur originally envisioned his development to house a population of 55,000, the town has not yet reached its founder’s goal, with just under 50,000 residents counted during the 2010 census.
